Ley Len, a third grade student (May, 2001)

Ley Len is 12 years old. He is at the top of his third grade class at The Hayashida Sakunoshin Memorial School. His parents, Chey Ley and Pang Am, are farmers. He has two brothers and four sisters ranging from 5 months to 20 years old. His younger siblings are too young for school, but two of his older sister (10 and 16 years old) also attend The Hayashida Sakunsoshin Memorial School with Len. 

In Their Own Words. . .
On his oldest sister: "My oldest sister is Ley Ap. She is 20 years old. She stopped studying after the second grade because at that time in our village there was no schooling above the second grade."

 
On the new school: "I feel very happy with the new school building. I have never seen a very nice concrete building like this before. Now, I like to come to school because of the new school building."

 
On school subjects: "I like to study mathematics because I think it is more important than other subjects. I do not like studying social science because it is very difficult to learn."

 
On his hobbies: "Besides studying, I like to read, and when I meet my friends I like to play soccer (football). I like to play soccer because it makes me happy and healthy."

 

On his future: "I want to be a teacher because I want to teach the next generations (of Cambodians)."
