The Rattanak Sophorn Nippon Foundation School

Leh Rosaly, 14 years old, is a fifth grade student at The Rattanak Sophorn Nippon Foundation School.  He was ranked fifth among the 30 students in his class.  His father searches for jewels and his mother is a housewife.

In Their Own Words. .

On the new building: “I like the new school building because it’s easy to sit in while the old wooden school building was very crowded and uncomfortable.”

 
On school subjects:  “I like to come to school because I can get knowledge.  I like learning mathematics because then I can learn how to calculate.  I don’t like social science because it is difficult.”

 
On his hobbies:  “When I have free time, I like to study the lessons.  When I meet my friends, we talk about school and study together.”

 
On his future:

“I want to be a jewel finder when I grow up because it is easy.”

[The area around Pailin is noted for the presence of precious stones, including rubies and sapphires.  The Khmer Rouge used to sell these gems to finance their war effort, and now locals search for them in the hopes of striking it rich.]
