The Cambodia Rural School Project
|
Mr. So Kim San is the director of the Charles B. Wang-Computer Associates School Number Two. He has been the director for six years and was a teacher for 20 years.
| On the new building: | “I am proud to be the director
of this new school.”
|
| On the joys of his job: | “I became a teacher because I
love the kids here. Although
I was asked to become commune chief a few years back, I remained a
teacher because I love my students.
After I retire, I may run for commune chief.
I went to Battambang City for training three times, once for four
months, then for a year, and again for four months.
I would like to teach all the kids to gain more knowledge and
help them in the future.”
|
| On the difficulties of his job: | “Most teachers here are
volunteer teachers. They’re
inexperienced, so it’s difficult.
But I work to train them all as best as I can.”
|
| On school subjects: | “The kids all want to start
businesses, so they like mathematics.
They also want to study English or Thai so that they can work
with foreigners and tourists, because this is a border town.”
[O Smach, the village where the school is located, is in the
northwest corner of the country. It
is very close to a border crossing with Thailand, and many Thai tourists
can be seen near the village.]
|
| On the future of his students: | “I would like to establish a middle school near here because this village is growing fast and the nearest middle school is far away. When students study far away from home, it is very difficult for them, so having a local middle school would be good for them.” |
