(September, 2001)Soy Kim Leang is a 15-year-old fifth grade student at the Diana and Al Kaff School. She was ranked eighth in her class of 38 students. Her parents are farmers and of her four siblings three attend school with her.
| On the new building: | “The old school was narrow, with seven or eight students
seated at one table. The
new school building is very nice and comfortable because only two
students sit at a table.”
|
| On her family: | “My parents don’t want me to graduate because they
say they won’t have anyone to help them.
I know my father finished up to the fourth grade, but I don’t
know why he stopped studying. My
mother never went to school. If
I could go anywhere I would go to Phnom Penh because I want to work at
a garment factory with my elder sister and send money home to my
parents.”
|
| On school subjects: | “I like
learning Khmer because if someone wants me to read or write I can do
it. I don’t like
learning mathematics because it has numbers and I do not understand
them well.”
|
| On her hobbies: | “When I
meet my friends I like to discuss the lesson before class begins
because I am afraid that when the teacher calls on me I won’t know
the answer. In my free
time I like to read Khmer books.”
|
| On her future: | “If I could do anything in the world I would be a
nurse because I want to help people.”
|
| Message to the donor: | “I would like to thank the donor for donating a new school building for me and my friends.” |
