The Tatsuo Maruyama School

Keuk Beng Heak is a 14-year-old sixth grade student at the Tatsuo Maruyama School.  He was ranked first among his 32 classmates at the end of last year.  He is the youngest of seven children, only one of whom has gone to secondary school.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new building: “I am very happy studying here.  After the new building was built, more parents sent their children to school, so now more kids get an education.”

On his future: “I want to be a teacher because my own teachers will soon retire and the kids here still need teachers.”

On school subjects: “I like mathematics most because it is easy to understand and I do well at it.  I like literature least because it is hard to memorize the lessons.”

On his free time: “I help my father to farm, read books and play football.”

If I could do anything…: “I would like to go to America because it is the most developed country in the world and I would like to work there.”
