Dear AAFC Donor,
If you’ve been considering a donation of appreciated
securities, this may be the time to act. Substantial tax savings
resulting from direct transfers from IRA’s (see #2 below)
may expire at the end of 2007.
1. If you have stock that you have
owned for more than one year, and it has appreciated since
you purchased it, you will be entitled to an income
tax deduction equal to the market value of your donated securities.
Also, by donating the securities the capital gains tax will
be avoided.
Here is an example: Ms. Donor purchased 100 shares of ABC
stock three years ago at $50 per share, paying $5,000. This
stock is now worth $100 per share, or $10,000. If Ms. Donor
sold the stock, she would pay capital gains taxes on the appreciated
amount of $5,000. On the other hand, if Ms. Donor donates
the stock to AAFC, she is entitled to a charitable deduction
of $10,000 and will pay no capital gains tax.
2. If the appreciated stock you own is in an IRA,
and you meet the criteria listed below, you are also
eligible for significant tax savings. As a result of The Pension
Protection Act of 2006, donations made during 2007 can be
made directly from your IRA to AAFC. This transfer goes untaxed,
resulting in a significant benefit. In the past, income from
the IRA had to first be reported on your return, and then
charitable contributions were made with after-tax dollars.
Also, there will be no penalty on early withdrawals as a
result of these contributions. Since the distribution will
not be included in taxable income, individuals will not be
able to claim a tax deduction for the charitable contribution.
This provision is effective for 2006 and 2007 only.
You may contribute assets this way if:
• You are age 70½ or over
• The donation is $100,000 or less each year
• Your donation is made on or before Dec. 31
• You transfer funds from an IRA or a Rollover IRA
• You transfer the money directly from your IRA to AAFC,
a qualified non-profit organization
For More Information
Consider consulting with your financial, tax, or legal advisor
prior to making a donation of appreciated securities to AAFC.
They are best able to assess your particular situation and
advise accordingly. If you would like more information about
AAFC, or the various ways your stock holdings can be used
to aid the people of Cambodia through its ongoing activities
there, please contact Bernard Krisher in Japan at bernie@media.mit.edu
contact Garry Royce in the US at 609-926-1739, or visit our
website at www.cambodiaschools.com.
