Not Mines, But Flowers
On September 30th in the Japanese Diet (parliament), the landmine ban treaty (Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction) was ratified.
Let's cheer together with Pech Peou, my foster daughter in Phnom Penh.
110 million landmines have been spread all over the world and only 100,000, less than one percent, are cleared in a year. If no more mines are planted, it will take more than a thousand years to clear them all. It's a monstrous task but let's get started.
