Girl #98 - Phien

Snorn Phien is a 16 year old ethnic Phnong enrolled in the 7th grade of the Ascham School, #281, Senmonorom commune, Oraing district, Mondulkiri province.
Phien has three brothers and she is the second child in the family. Her three brothers are students. Her mother died in 2000 during the childbirth along with the baby she was giving birth to. Her father married again with a woman who had a daughter, now 19 years old, from a previous marriage. This stepsister lives with a different family.
The rice they harvest is not enough to feed the family. When they can get extra work, her stepmother and father make fences and grow trees to earn 10000Riels per day (= $2.50). Phien often does not go to school. She works with her parents to earn more money.
After meeting us, the parents agreed to let Phien go back to school.
