Girl #96 - Sanean

Sponsor: Jennifer Yuen

Nha Sanean is a 15-year-old ethnic Phnong in the 8th grade of the Ascham School Community, #281, Senmonorom commune, Oraing district, Mondulkiri province.

Nha Sanean lives with her mother, two sisters and two brothers. Her father died in 2006 because of illness. Her mother is 51 years old. One sister is married and her other siblings are students. The mother is not strong enough to work on the farm so Sanean’s married sister along with her husband do the farm work. But they still don’t have enough rice for the family. The sister and her husband have occasional work to fix fences for other families. They get paid 100000Riels per fence (= $25). They can finish a fence in two or three weeks depending on the dimensions of the land but this work comes to them infrequently. They also weed other people’s farms for 6000Riels a day (=$1.2).

Sanean doesn’t have enough school materials and enough food. She dropped out of school in order to help the family.

After meeting us, the family agreed to join our program and send Sanean back to school.
