Rath Kanitha is a 14 year old ethnic Phnong in the 6th grade of the Elizabeth Rinehart Ohrstrom School, #268, Speanmeanchey commune, Senmonorom district, Mondulkiri province.
Kanitha has five sisters and one brother. Her mother died in 2006. She lives with her father who is 47 is the sole breadwinner of the family. He is a guard at the secondary school and earns a monthly salary of 50000Riels ($12.50) but it is insufficient to support the family. The sisters of Kanitha sell some small things in the school for which they can get 10000Riels a day ($2.50).
Kanitha doesn’t have proper clothes, school materials and enough food. She likes to go to school but the family situation sends her back home to help with work.
After our meeting with the family, all members understood that it was in Kanitha’s best interest to pursue an education. The sisters and the father agreed they will support Kanitha to regularly attend school.
