Laek Ey is a 12 year old ethnic Phnong enrolled in the
first grade at the Ascham School Community, 262, Romnea commune, Senmonorom
district, Mondulkiri province.
Ey has three brothers and two sisters. One of brothers
and one of her sisters are farmers and help the family with farm work.
Her father is 40 years old. Her mother died in 2003 because of illness.
The father remarried and has a second wife. The rice they harvest is
not enough to feed the family and they must buy the rice from the market.
To add to the family income, they collect resin from trees and sell
it in the market. They earn 10000Riels or 20000Riels a day. Their house
is built with bamboo and the roof is made of tree leaves.
Due to her family situation, Ey entered school very
late (in Cambodia the students who enter first grade should be 7 or
8 years).
After the meeting us, the family agreed to send Ey to
school and support her to attain perfect attendance.
