Girl #91 - Treat

Sreing Treat is a 14 year old ethnic Phnong enrolled in the 5th grade of the Ascham School, #262, Poutaing village, Romnea commune, Senmonorom district, Mondulkiri.
Treat has three sisters. Treat is the eldest child. Her 12 year old and nine year old sisters stay home and do not attend school. Only Treat had the opportunity to attend school but she is frequently absent because her mother works in the farm alone. Her father died ten years ago. The rice they harvest is not enough for the family. The rice from their farm feed the family for only three to four months during the year. The mother gathers items from the forest to sell in the market but she can earn only about 500Riels a day (=$1.10). Treat always helps her mother in housework and in gathering items to sell.
After meeting with us, the mother understands that education is very important for her daughter’s future. Treat is back at school.
She wants to be a teacher and help the children in the community.
