Girl #90 - In

Sponsor: Ellen Godbey Carson

Location of the school: Blogn In is a 12 year old ethnic Phnong enrolled in the third grade of the Ascham School, #262, Poutaing village, Romenea commune, Senmonorom district, Mondulkiri province.

In lives with her mother, two sisters and one brother. Her mother is a farmer. Her father died in 2003. He had two wives. The first wife, In’s mother, had four children, including Blogn In. The second wife had three children. Nine members of the family live together and work on the same farm. They are a big family and the rice they harvest is not enough for the whole family. They have to work in the forest and find resin trees to extract resin. They can earn up to 6000Riels (=$1.50) per day for resin but not everyday. For additional food they gather wild potatoes, tree leaves, etc. from the forest. Most days they eat only rice with salt and pepper.

Due to these difficult conditions, In was frequently absent from school. After we explained to the family about the benefits of education for future of their children, the family agreed to send In back to school.
