Sponsor: Mrs. Z. Gale Cogan

Profile: Nim Em is a 15-year old fifth-grader at Tith Mom School in Trapang Chak village, Tram Kak commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province.

There are seven members in her family. She has one sister and brother. She is the second child of her father’s first wife who passed away 13 years ago. She now lives with her father, stepmother and two half-siblings. Her oldest sister left home and went to live with someone in Phnom Penh. Her father neglects the family, is often drunk and plays cards. She was frequently absent from school because she had to find crabs and pick vegetables to sell to earn 1500 to 2000 riel (30 to 40 US cents) a day. During the rainy season she harvested when someone would to hire her so she could earn 3000 riel (75 US cents.) Both she and her younger brother were almost always absent from school because her family placed greater priority on them bringing in whatever income they could earn over pursuing an education at school.
