Girl #2 - Vary

Sponsor: Soroptomist International of Osaka-Chuo

Profile: Yorn Vary is 14 years old and a fourth grade student at the 2005-2006 semester of the Kirivorn primary school in Kirivorn village, Kompong Sela commune, Sre Ambel district, Kok Kong province.

Current situation: Her family’s homeland is in Prey Veng province. They migrated to live here 11 years ago, as there weren’t any jobs to do up there. Her family is staying on someone’s land and gets $25 per month for keeping up a good care of a fruit plantation. There are seven members in the family. She has four brothers and five sisters. She is the seventh child in the family. Two of her siblings are married and live separately in Prey Veng province. And other three siblings are working in a garment factory in Phnom Penh but not earning such a good salary; they all could only support themselves. Her parents are farmers. However, $25, it’s not enough to support for whole family, so that Vary is absent from school sometimes to help her parents, working any where that people want to hire her such as growing rice, trees, (earning 50 to 70cesnts a day), also taking care of her siblings and looking for food at the rice filed (crabs, fishes, snails etc..).

Problem she faces: Her family is very poor and her father’s health not well. He seems like a disabled person (usually stays at home). Only she and her mother are responsibility for the family.

Suggestion: Her mother will send her to attend school if we can provide $10 a month.

Support: we pay the parents $10 a month ($120 a year).
