Girl #1 - Srey Mom
Sponsor: Soroptomist International

Profile: Run Srey Mom
is 12 years old and a fourth grade student at the 2005-2006 semester
of the Kirivorn primary school in Kirivorn village, Kompong Sela commune,
Sre Ambel district, Kok Kong province.
Current situation: Her
family's homeland is in Takeo province. They came to live here eight
years ago, renting someone's land for living and farming (rice cultivation).
They have to return 150kg of rice per one hectare to the landlord. There
are 11 members in the family including her old grandmother and son in-law.
She has four sisters and three brothers. She is the seventh child in
the family. The family is very poor. The reason for her frequent school
absence is due to the rainy season. Her house is far, some four kilometers
from the school, requiring more than one hour's walk in good weather
but twice that in the rainy season or four hours' round trip. Moreover,
her house is isolated from other houses in the village and in a very
quiet location, too dangerous for her when she walks alone. Her parent
says, however, Srey Mom studies hard and is willing to go to school
every day.
Problem she faces: Her
house is distant from school and her family is poor. They're busy with
their daily work, so they could not have time to accompany her to school
as well. Srey Mom has to walk passing the forest field.
Suggestion: I asked her
parents to send her younger brother (8 years old) to attend school and
they can walk together, avoiding danger.
Support: we pay the parents
$10 a month ($120 a year).
